A Bit of HistoryThe Village of 1386
Portico arose along the road leading to Florence in ancient times, already famous during Roman times as a market place and later as a castle belonging to the Counts Guidi of Dovadola.
Since 1386, the Florentine Republic chose Portico as the capital of its Romagna territories.
The village retains almost entirely its medieval appearance, divided into three levels: the upper part with the castle and the parish church; the middle part with the noble palaces of the 13th and 14th centuries that housed Romagnoli and Tuscan nobles who sought refuge here due to political struggles; and finally, the lower part with the houses of artisans and commoners.
